E&J Gallo, the Californian winery has been caught in a scam, a 7 million euro scam.
A group of wine producers from the Languedoc region have passed off 18 million bottles of plonk as Pinot Noir. This has been bottled and sold under Gallo’s “Red Bicyclette Pinot Noir Single Grape Wine” brand.
The fraud came to light when customs officials noticed that more Pinot Noir had been sold to E&J Gallo than was actually produced by the entire region.
Apparently E&J Gallo have not received a single complaint.
I love this story for a number of reasons:
1. It demonstrates that checking the numbers is a good thing to do.
2. It shows how easy it is to over specify what you need.
3. It made me laugh like a drain.
