Is £500 a Lot of Money?

13 August, 2010 by James Lawther Leave a Comment

The BBC has reported that the  Department for Communities and Local Government is publishing all spending over £500.  It states that last year the department spent £310k on catering.

That sounds like a big number until you look at the graph that is also published.

Personally I would be a little more worried about the £55 million they spent on “Managed/Outsourced” services than the revelation that they spent £5k on blue tack.

Big Government costs big money, a sense of perspective is all important.

I guess they also spent £100k counting and publishing everything that cost more then £500.

James Lawther is a middle-aged, middle manager.

To reach this highly elevated position he has worked in numerous industries, from supermarket retailing to tax collecting.  He has had several operational roles, including running the night shift in a frozen pea packing factory and carrying out operational research for a credit card company.

As you can see from his C.V. he has either a wealth of experience or is incapable of holding down a job.  If the latter is true this post isn’t worth a minute of your attention.

Unfortunately, the only way to find out is to read it and decide for yourself.
