Better Sex in 8 Seconds

1 April, 2011 by James Lawther 1 Comment

Information is accumulating at an alarming rate

In 2008 the number of web pages exceeded 1 trillion, at a second a page it would take 32,000 years to read them all.

This is a problem. With so much information how do you get people to pay attention to your information. How do you stop them flitting on to the next thing?

Most people have an attention span of 8 seconds

Can you grab people’s attention in 8 seconds and then hold it?

  • Does your advert stand out from the crowd?
  • Is it blatantly obvious what the point of your chart is?
  • Does your headline intrigue people to read on?
  • Does your road sign get followed?
  • Does your call to action result in action?

8 seconds!

Sorry, the bit about better sex was a lie.

James Lawther

James Lawther is a middle-aged, middle manager.

To reach this highly elevated position he has worked in numerous industries, from supermarket retailing to tax collecting.  He has had several operational roles, including running the night shift in a frozen pea packing factory and carrying out operational research for a credit card company.

As you can see from his C.V. he has either a wealth of experience or is incapable of holding down a job.  If the latter is true this post isn’t worth a minute of your attention.

Unfortunately, the only way to find out is to read it and decide for yourself.

There I was getting all excited

I think your point is very well made though. People in the advertising industry get paid huge amounts of money to makesure that the message gets over quickly.

Maybe we should be thinking the same way.
