If you spent all your time looking back at what you had achieved, it would be easy to become complacent, to sit back, to rest on your laurels.
If you spent all your time looking ahead at what you have to achieve, it would be easy to become disheartened, to lose confidence, to give up.
Performance management is a little like walking up a mountain:
- Sometimes you need to press on, step up and keep your eye on the peak in front of you.
- Sometimes you need to stop, sit down and catch the view behind you.
If you only ever take one approach will you succeed? It certainly won’t be easy.
Better never rests, but sometimes it does need a change of view.
