Mark Jenkins is the Professor of Business Strategy at Cranfield School of Management. He has spent time studying Formula One, trying to understand what creates great performance.
I’m a bit sceptical of people who study “great” organisations. The genre leading books In Search of Excellence and Good to Great have both had a good bashing. I think you only learn from failure, not success.
Yet Professor Jenkins ideas are thought provoking. (Maybe I only say that because I agree with him.)
The performance pyramid is a deceptively simple model. It shows the three ways that truly successful organisations behave:
- Focus – absolute clarity about what is important
- Learning – using the Deming cycle
- Culture – removing blame, thinking about the long term and collaborating
